AJ Stockdale ’26 is turning a lifelong passion into reality by studying at Carthage, where they are majoring in animation and minoring in graphic design. As a recipient of the Kenosha Oaks Scholarship, AJ is grateful for the financial support that has made it possible for them to grow as an artist. “I was extremely fortunate to have received the Kenosha Oaks Scholarship. It has truly changed my life and allowed me to pursue my dreams of being a lifelong artist,” says AJ.

As a Kenosha native, AJ values the opportunity to continue their education close to home while staying connected to the community. Whether attending events in downtown Kenosha or exploring the Harbor Market during the summer, AJ finds inspiration all around. “Knowing I’ve been so close to Carthage my whole life is so amazing. The lake has always been a landmark in my childhood, with a new photo of my family in front of it every year.”

“Carthage faculty have helped me in a multitude of ways…I have never felt alone on my Carthage journey.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of its location in Kenosha. I have lived in Kenosha all of my life and always saw myself going to Carthage. I also had the incredible opportunity to take part in the Kenosha Oaks Scholarship competition, in which I received a scholarship, and it has greatly supported my learning through the years and allowed me to attend my dream school.”

Faculty mentors

“Carthage faculty have helped me in a multitude of ways, from helping me craft my major to assisting me through every project I’ve ever wanted to create. I have never felt alone on my Carthage journey. Faculty such as professors Joshua McGowan and Jojin Van Winkle take time out of their classes to help me focus on my future. I would not have been able to accomplish as much as I have without their guidance.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class at Carthage has been Digital Art with Prof. McGowan. With each project, I feel more compelled to push myself in my digital art-making process. Whether we focus on my art style, color theory, projection, or character design, I always feel ready to take my digital art to the next level. I find myself more open to pulling my digital art out of the monitor and into the world.”

Unique opportunities

“Some of the best opportunities I’ve had at Carthage include having my work shown in the Annual Juried Student Art Show on two occasions and going to EXPO Chicago with my class!”

Career goal

“My career goal is to become a 2D animator, character designer, and/or storyboard artist at a studio that creates entertaining media!”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is one of the window seats at Starbucks in Hedberg Library!”

Best tip for making friends

“My favorite way to make friends at Carthage is through classes! I find it difficult to attend large events. Small class sizes allow me to get to know people slowly and find common interests quickly. Complimenting someone is my go-to strategy for making a new friend!”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old self would be so proud of me. Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to be an animator. Knowing that I made it through high school, got a full-ride scholarship, am attending Carthage, and have created my own major makes me happy beyond belief. I can only imagine how I will feel looking back at my 20-year-old self as I get older and remember my college days.”
